The sentencing for Tess Hildula has been postponed for a third time, more than four years after authorities found dead and starving quails and pigeons at her late husband's bird farm.
Hildula, 63, entered guilty pleas in May 2005 for two counts of first-degree aggravated theft, felonies, and first-degree animal neglect, a misdemeanor. Her sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 30, 2005, but Hildula failed to show up, according to Columbia County assistant district attorney Dale Anderson. Anderson said there is now a warrant for her arrest, and officials think she is in the Long Beach area.
The case began in 2001 when Columbia County sheriff's deputies and animal control officers found 7,000 quails and pigeons dead of malnutrition and hypothermia at Columbia River Farms outside of Clatskanie. The county took care of the remaining 23,000 birds for several months at the cost of at least $20,000 to Columbia County taxpayers.
