After extensive testing by the family's veterinarian, it was determined that one local family's dogs were poisoned with antifreeze. Last week, North Irwin residents Keith and Sharon Calisti had to put down their two dogs -- 3-year-old Bailey and 7-year-old Duke.

The Calistis said they knew something was wrong when Duke began convulsing on January 16, 2006. They thought maybe it was a seizure. "But then we seen Bailey coming in with the same kinds of symptoms. She was walking around, dragging her back legs like she was a drunk. Neither of them could keep themselves balanced well. They were throwing up. They weren't doing good at all," Keith said. The Calistis rushed the dogs to the vet.

For Duke, there was no hope. His liver and kidneys were failing. He had to be put down. But Bailey was hanging on. The family even brought her home for a while. That first night was a bad night. Every hour on the hour she was throwing up, drinking water, then throwing up. It was just constant," Keith said. After Bailey was laid to rest, blood work and urinalysis revealed the two had been poisoned with antifreeze.

State police say it was no accident. Keith searched the yard over and over to see if someone threw something inside the dogs invisible fence, but found nothing. The dog bowls were clean, too. State police canvassed the neighborhood and found no grudges. In fact, neighbors here said they loved the Calisti dogs. So now, the family is waiting for someone to come forward. "Anybody who knows anything that can help us, it won't bring the dogs back but it will bring closure," the Calistis said.

It's not clear how -- or why -- they ingested the antifreeze, but if state police find out who did this they do plan to file animal cruelty charges.
