A cruel criminal has killed a dog in a suburban street, leaving pet owners living in fear.
Police say they are hunting someone with a depraved mindset and have found no motive for the Williamstown attacks. It is believed the perpetrator threw poisoned meat into back yards of houses in Oakbank St from a laneway.
The dog, a german shepherd, was killed on December 24, 2005. It is believed to have died after eating poisoned meat. Residents were too scared to be identified or photographed with their pets, in case the dog killer strikes again.
The owner of german shepherd, Trista, said the loss had devastated the family. "We went across the road for a few drinks ... and when we got home we found her dead. "It ruined Christmas. We had presents for her under the tree," said the woman. She said her children wanted another pet to replace 2 1/2-year-old Trista, but were afraid the same thing might happen.
Dog owners in the street expressed disbelief. "I come home and the first thing I do is check out the back for bait," said one man. Another resident, who works from home, said she now left her dog inside when she was out. "It's just unimaginable that someone could do something like that," she said. "I find it a worry for the whole neighbourhood, and I would even if I didn't have a dog," said the owner of three-year-old terrier Freya.
