Two pregnant dogs abandoned, tied up to a tree near exit 6 on the highway
Nashua, NH (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, May 31, 2000
County: Hillsborough

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

On Thursday, May 31st, 2000, two stray dogs were brought into the shelter by a good Samaratan who had observed the dogs the night before tied to a tree at exit 6 near the highway.

Both dogs were pregnant, near delivery and emaciated. An emergency c-section was performed. The English Setter had 13 pups, one of which was stillborn. A team of 10 people assisted with the resuscitation of the puppies, but none of them survived. The mother went into cardiac arrest and was revived but when the 2nd arrest occurred it was decided to euthanize her because of brain damage.

The 2nd dog, a mixed breed, who was named Shelby had 9 puppies, 2 of which died shortly after delivery. Shelby and 7 puppies survived and were all adopted.

The medical expenses for these dogs was covered by the Abby Fund which provides life-saving, emergency medical care for homeless animals. If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution to the Abby Fund, please contact Bill DeSelle at 603-880-1490 x244.
