The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently charged licensed animal exhibitors Sherry and Kenneth Roche, doing business in Elk Grove, Ill., with violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
"These are serious charges," said W. Ron DeHaven, deputy administrator for animal care with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, a part of USDA's marketing and regulatory programs mission area. "Several of the charges relate directly to animal health, and there are two instances where the Roches refused to allow APHIS inspectors to examine their animals."
Over several visits, APHIS inspectors found that the Roches failed to:
--Maintain programs of disease control and prevention, euthanasia, and adequate veterinary care under the supervision and assistance of a veterinarian;
--Provide veterinary care to animals in need of care;
--Completely record information required by the regulations including the names and addresses of persons who sold them animals, the driver's license number of persons from whom they acquired thirteen animals, and acquisition date of the animals;
--Record at least ten animals that were present at their facility;
--Provide sufficient shade to allow animals to protect themselves from direct sunlight;
--Record complete animal inventory and acquisitions and dispositions;
-Maintain structurally sound housing in good repair so as to protect the animals from injury, to contain the animals, and to restrict the entrance of other animals;
-Clean primary enclosures as required;
-Keep premises clean, free of accumulations of trash, and in good repair; and
-Allow APHIS to inspect their animals. Case UpdatesLicensed exhibitors Sherry and Kenneth Roche in Ellis Grove, Ill. The Roches settled their case with USDA and agreed to $2,500 fine. | Source: USDA - October 11, 2001 Update posted on May 29, 2006 - 12:59PM |
