In February 2005, PETA was alerted to a Thayer County property reportedly belonging to Wayne and Howard Pohlmann, where, according to news sources, as many as 32 cows had been found malnourished and dead two months prior. PETA caseworkers contacted local authorities and learned that charges were reportedly being considered against the brothers. In the meantime, PETA was assured that the surviving cattle were under vet care and being closely observed by the Sheriff's Department.
Eight months later, PETA has begun to receive complaints again about cows allegedly suffering from starvation on the very same property. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
