The mixed breed guard dog known now as Second Chance was reportedly tortured during his time in a Bay Shore auto body lot. His hind legs and tail were hacked at with a machete, and he was starving when animal police descended on the property two weeks ago to rescue him, authorities said.

Second Chance was losing blood fast, and only skilled veterinarians in Valley Stream could save his life.

The dog is still at the vet's office, recovering.

But he needs a new home.

"He loves to lay in your lap, and he loves to cuddle," said Rick Belyea, representing the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "He's a real cuddle machine."

"And the animal's demeanor afterwards was incredible," he said. "What they did to him was disgusting. Not only did they try to cut his hind legs off, but he was emaciated."

Cops and SPCA officers found the pit bull-shepherd-husky mix chained to a car hood in the lot.

A neighbor had called the cops after hearing Second Chance's incessant crying.

"The dog was tortured and had no water, so he was yelping," Belyea said. "He became a target in somebody's sick game."

But Second Chance, who has a great personality, is "doing good now," Belyea said. "He's up and running. The leg wounds have healed. Not completely, but enough that he's up and about."

The SPCA has not been able to trace the dog's history, including how he was acquired by the unnamed auto body shop's owner. The man now faces animal cruelty charges. SPCA officials would not release the suspect's name.

"He'll never be allowed to adopt an animal again, that is for sure," Belyea said.

Anyone interested in adopting Second Chance should call the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722.  To make a donation to help with Second Chance's extensive vet care, please
