Kitten killed, burned
San Angelo, TX (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Sep 18, 2005
County: Tom Green

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

San Angelo police are questioning two men regarding a kitten whose body was found burned.

''I know for sure that it was burned,'' said investigating Officer Michael Gaeta, ''but I don't know what killed the cat.''

The black kitten was six weeks old, Dale Ferguson said. It belonged to his son, Harley Ferguson, 12, and was called ''Febe'' (fee-bee).

Harley had bottle-fed Febe since its birth. On the evening of Sept 18, the kitten was in the family's fenced yard when they left to go to the grocery store.

They returned a short time later, and Harley learned of the possible death of Febe from a friend. Several young men told the boy that they killed the kitten and then were going to burn the body, according to a San Angelo police incident report.

''It was hard for him to handle,'' Dale Ferguson said.

He said he's going to try to get his son some counseling.

The incident report includes a witness account that describes three or four young men ''standing around the fire, yelling and laughing loudly'' while the cat's body burned in the 300 block of East 27th Street.

Gaeta, the investigating officer, said when he arrived on the scene, he found a cat's burned body. He said he took the body to the Fergusons, who identified it as Febe.

Gaeta said the case is under investigation pending the questioning of the two suspects, ages 18 and 20. The officer said state jail felony charges of cruelty to animals are possible.
