A dog, named Annie, was reportedly shot after running away from a kennel while her owners were on vacation. Kennel employees first thought that Annie had been hit by a car when she showed up injured on Aug 22, but x-rays showed otherwise.

"They were very visible in the Xray, all of the pellets in her body," said Terry Urquhart, Annie's owner.

It all started when the dog escaped from a run at Stone Hill Kennel. The owner of a home just down the road from the kennel, who asked not to be named, says the dog got into the pool area, and wasn't being very friendly. In fact, the owner was afraid the dog would bite. She shooed the dog away, and it ran into the woods.

The owner of the home says she heard a gun shot shortly after she got out of the shower, and a short time later found Annie under these trees.

The dog warden in Hastings was notified and picked up the injured dog. What happened next is what upsets Terry Urquhart the most.

"The dog warden did call the veterinarian and I don't know why the veterinarian could not put two and two together with her name and her phone number. We were regular customers. I don't know why they didn't say get that dog here immediately," he said.

North Country Veterinary Services would not comment about the incident. It wasn't until the owner of the kennel called the warden to see if any dogs were found, that Annie was brought to the vet.

"The dog warden tells us that they don't have authorization to get medical attention for the animal. Why? I don't know," said Don Podejko, with the Stone Hill Kennel.

The Hastings town attorney wouldn't let the dog warden to talk to local media.

However, a councilor in Hastings says they don't always bring injured animals to get medical attention, because the town can't afford the bill, if the owner didn't want the pet treated. State Police are now investigating, trying to find out who may have shot the dog.

This was the first dog to escape from the Stone Hill Kennel. The owner says he will make changes to the run to make sure no other dogs get loose.
