Two northwest Iowa sisters face animal neglect charges after Cherokee police found more than 180 diseased cats and dogs in their homes. Officials say officers went into one home in early August wearing Haz-Mat suits because of the overwhelming smell.
Nancy Wede is charged with 26 counts of animal neglect, while her sister, Susan Wede, faces 16 counts. Both women are also charged with violating the city's limit on domestic animals.
Charges from the Cherokee County sheriff's office against Susan Wede are pending. Officials say 141 cats and two dogs were found in a building she owns near rural Rock Township.
In Cherokee, police removed more than 40 animals from the women's homes on August fourth after complaints of excessive odor.
The animals suffered from a variety of infectious diseases, and veterinarians determined all of them needed to be euthanized.
