Stephen Gregoriadis, 41, unemployed has been sentenced to one month periodic detention for cruelty to a cat.
Lucy, the cat, was considered extremely friendly and was never seen to bite or scratch any one.
Gregordiadis denied the charge. The court was told he swung the cat against a wall up to six times on March 1.
Gregoriadis told Judge Anthony Willy when he tried to pick the cat up, it clung to his hand, scratching and biting him. He pulled the cat by the tail to get it off him but did not swing the cat against a wall.
When Peter Fenton heard a thumping noise outside his apartment, he saw Gregordiadis swing the cat against the wall up to six times.
Fenton said he was appalled and rushed outside to stop him.
Judge Willy said cruelty to an animal would not be taken lightly. "The animal was not dangerous or vicious and suffered long-term harm by way of a broken tooth and short-term pain and suffering."
Lucy has recovered from the attack. References | The Christchurch NZ Press - Sept 19, 1997 |
