Complaints about dogs on Avoca Island led to a man's arrest on charges of animal cruelty, dogfighting and hog-dog fighting - and, because he allegedly burned papers to destroy evidence, obstruction of justice.
Irvian Singleton Jr. of Morgan City was questioned on June 22 about reports that he kept fighting dogs in an abandoned house on Avoca Island, Trooper Willie Williams, a spokesman for state police, said.
He said troopers were tipped on June 23 that someone was destroying evidence. Williams said a fire had been set outside an abandoned house, and other information was removed.
According to the New Orleans SPCA, three of the 21 dogs seized had to be put down. The other 19 animals are currently at the St. Mary Parish Animal Control facility.
