Dogs abandoned, one found dead
Yonkers, NY (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jun 14, 2005
County: Westchester

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Patricia E. Jenkins

Authorities found the 11-month-old female Rottweiler, whose body was decaying, partially eaten and maggot-infested. The ailing Rottweiler-pit bull mix, a 1-year-old male, was taken to a veterinarian, then turned over to the Yonkers Animal Shelter.

Yonkers police and animal-control officers were called to the apartment at 11:33 a.m. by the building's 45-year-old superintendent, who had detected a foul odor. He told police that Jenkins had vacated the apartment several months ago and that she left the animals without food or water.

Patricia E. Jenkins was being held yesterday in the county jail with bail set at $7,500 after two dogs were found untended in her apartment, police said. One of the dogs had died, and the other was in dire health.

Jenkins was being evicted from her 4 Orchard Place apartment, and the dogs, a Rottweiler and a Rottweiler-pit bull mix, were left behind when she abandoned the unit, police stated.

All the furniture in the apartment was thrown about, broken and chewed, according to court records. The foul-smelling apartment was full of feces, fleas and maggots, the records said.

Jenkins was charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of abandonment of animals under the Agriculture and Markets Laws. She is due in City Court on July 5.

As police were searching for Jenkins on Tuesday, she approached Officers Ralph Califano and Michael Atkins of the 4th Precinct in Getty Square at 3:30 p.m., saying she had been told by a friend that police were looking for her.

The officers took her to the Detective Division, where she was questioned, and arrested her after she gave a written statement, police said.
