Prosecutors charged Sharon K. Copeland, 27, of Alton with animal neglect June 9, after three pit bull mix dogs were found dead in her yard.

A fourth dog, a puppy about a week old, was taken to an animal shelter for care until it is old enough to be adopted.

An animal control officer responded to a neighbor's report and found an adult female dog that had tried to jump over a fence and hanged itself. Two puppies also died. One of them seemed to have died when it got stuck in the fence trying to get to its mother.

Police say Copeland was charged with misdemeanors instead of aggravated intentional cruelty, a felony, because she did not harm the dogs intentionally.
