more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Attempting to feed cat to alligator
Columbus, OH (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jun 9, 2005
County: Franklin

Disposition: Convicted
Case Images: 2 files available

Defendant/Suspect: Shawn Wright

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

Shawn Wright was charged with animal cruelty, and faces the possibility of a 90-day jail sentence.

Witnesses allegedly saw a kitten climbing up the cage, hanging on to the side. And then it would fall down and go back up and there was an alligator inside that cage with the kitten.

When humane society officer Leighanne Detillion arrived, she said Wright admitted trying to feed the kitten to a 3-foot alligator.

"The gentleman screamed, 'I can do whatever I want with the cat! It's a stray and it doesn't matter what happens to it!'" Detillion claims Wright said.

Humane society officers said Wright picked the kitten up by neck, shaking it violently as they ordered him to put it down. Instead, they said he threw Ally the kitten more than 10 feet off the front porch.

"I'm like, I cannot believe he did that in front of me," Detillion stated.

"He didn't just toss her. He threw her as hard as he could. And she hit the concrete and bounced off."

Now Wright, 18, faces one charge of animal cruelty. City prosecutors plan to ask for the maximum penalty.

"Doing this type of behavior indicates some violent tendencies. And that is obviously the public safety concern," assistant city prosecutor Bridget Carty said.

Wright's first court appearance is scheduled for June 15.

Ally the kitten will be made ready for adoption at the Franklin County Humane Society.

Case Updates

Thursday, Wright pled guilty to animal cruelty. The judge gave him probation, but Wright must also earn his high school equivalency diploma, get a job, and he cannot live with any animals for the next five years.

The kitten has been adopted in a new home.
