Brian Tarver, 19, of San Antonio was found guilty of helping to set a cat on fire. He was sentenced to seven months in jail and a $4,000 fine for his participation in burning the cat.
Kenneth Matt, 21, co-defendant was sentenced earlier this month to nine months in jail and a $4,000 fine after pleading no contest in a plea bargain with prosecutors.
Matt was scheduled to appear in court to begin serving his sentence but failed to show up. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest.
The pair were accused of dousing a young male cat, Matt's girlfriend's pet, with a flammable liquid and setting it on fire. The severely burned cat was euthanized.
Prosecutor Robert McClure said, "This defendant looked at this cat and laughed." Tarver's attorney, Tom Clark, asked jurors to consider his client's youth and lack of involvement in the crime when deciding his punishment. McClure said Tarver had the lighter in his hand.
McClure said Tarver doesn't care about society's rules. "He is a sociopath. He is dangerous." Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
