47 Cows, 50 horses, 24 dogs neglected Conejos County, CO (US)Incident Date: Friday, Apr 20, 2001 County: Conejos
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Patrick Boling
Patrick Bowling, 43, could face more than 60 cruelty to animal charges. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison on each misdemeanor charge.
Neighbors reported that his 47 cows, 50 horses and two dozen dogs (mostly boxers), were dying of thirst and starvation. The neighbors donated 6 tons of feed and hay. The town of Antonito took several truckoads of water to the animals.
Deputy District Attorney Iozo said, "This is probably one of the most serious animal-abuse cases I've ever heard of. This is not a situation where the animals were left alone for a couple of days. There were numerous animals in trouble."
Boling was arrested on April 20. Izzo said when he receives reports from state and health officials he will file charges against Boling in Conejos County Court.
State officials impounded the dogs but gave most of them back to Boling after he was released from jail. The five dogs locked inside a trailer were given to the San Luis Valley Humane League for adoption. References- The Denver Post - June 12, 2001
