An animal control officer stated 22 dogs had to be put down in the worst case of animal abuse and neglect he has ever seen.

"It's by far the worst case I've ever come across. By far," said Gary Maxwell. "It's going to haunt me for the rest of my life."

Maxwell said he discovered 40 dogs starving and living in filth in a home. Most were so underfed you could see their ribs sticking out. Some were feeding on the carcass of a dead dog, Maxwell said.

The house was covered in feces and the walls were soaked in urine. The stench was overwhelming."Rotting flesh, urine and feces that's about what it smelled like," Maxwell said.

Police are looking for the couple who lived in the home.

Eighteen of the dogs are being nursed back to health. They will go up for adoption Friday.

For information about adopting these dogs, call the Pendleton County Animal Shelter at (859) 472-5400.
