Yonkers Police Commissioner Robert Taggart announced the arrest of one Porforio Scharbaai a 38 year old male of 124 Oak Street for charges related to cruelty to an animal.

On March 27, 2005 Yonkers Police Officers Balezentis and Mahoney responded to 124 Oak Street on a report of an act of cruelty to an animal. There they spoke to a Mr. Jesus Alesandro who stated that an acquaintance of his, Mr. Scharbaai, had set Mr. Alesandros dog on fire. The officers entered the apartment and found that a mixed breed German Shepard/Husky type dog had been set on fire while it was confined in a kennel cage. Apparently a flammable liquid had been poured over the dog while it was in the cage and the dog was set on fire.

Mr. Alesandro told police that when he came home Mr. Scharbaai was leaving the apartment and he told Mr. Alesandro that he set the dog on fire. Mr. Scharbaai had given no reason why he had set the dog on fire.

Once the officers were assured that Mr. Alesandro would be able to get medical aid for the dog the officers proceeded to the Officers of the Westchester County District Attorney and secured a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Scharbaai. Mr. Scharbaais photograph was distributed throughout the department while officers sought his arrest.

On April 4, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. Police Officers Venturino and Donaghy were off duty and traveling together in the area of Elm Street and Oak Street when they spotted Scharbaai on the street corner. Initially the suspect denied that he was the person wanted and offered the police a false name and address. However when confronted with the picture he admitted that he was in fact Scharbaai and he was placed under arrest.

Commissioner Taggart said that this should send a clear message to those who commit such crimes. We will use all the resources of the police department to bring to justice those who abuse animals. Our officers take these cases very seriously and even our off duty officers will get involved.

The dog, although seriously injured, is expected to survive.
