A Cameron man was arrested on April 4, 2005 on animal cruelty charges after six dying or dead puppies were discovered in a cage at his Cameron business.
Robert Christensen, 75, owner and operator of the Loppye Mart, a resale shop on US 77 North, was arrested at the business just before noon Monday by Cameron police officer Joe Reyna.
Christensen was arraigned before Milam County Peace Justice O.C. "Chip" Dunsmoor on one charge of cruelty to animals. Dunsmoor set bond on Christensen at $2,000.
Christensen was freed from the Milam County Jail after posting bond Monday afternoon.
Reyna said police received a tip about the puppies Monday morning. Apparently the animals had been wandering outside the cage and subsequently gathered up and placed in a box behind an adjacent business.
Reyna said Christensen apparently returned the puppies to a makeshift cage at the front of his business and left them there.
"This was just a case of a lack of care causing those puppies to die," Reyna said. "They were just put in that cage and appeared to have starved to death."
Reyna said two of the puppies had died in the cage and two more died after being removed by city officials. Two others were euthanized after veterinarians determined that they could not be saved.
The penalty on a charge of cruelty to animals carries a fine and a maximum sentence of up to one year in jail. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
