David Riley, 42, whose last known address was 2169 Mecklenburg Road, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated cruelty to animals. The charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison. He was convicted of the crime Tuesday afternoon in Tompkins County Court.
The Enfield man pleaded guilty to the crime but is unlikely to face prison time.
Judge John Rowley said he can expect to be sentenced to a three-year period of conditional discharge, during which time he is not to own animals.
Lisa Rumsmoke of the Tompkins County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said, "I am relieved we got a guilty plea. The only thing that would have been better is if we could have actually saved the dog that he did that to."
The felony complaint submitted by the SPCA in June, stated Riley's orange and white female dog was found with a knife wound that extended from her throat to one of her ears.
The dog's throat was infested with maggots, covered with flies, and leaking pus. The dog was emaciated and unable to breathe without difficulty. She had to be euthanized.
Riley said he was continuing to take medication and receive couseling for a mental health problem. Mental health counseling is likely to be one condition of his sentencing.
Judge Rowley has reserved the right to order Riley to withdraw his guilty plea pending the outcome of the Tompkins County Probation Department investigation.
