A Brant Lake man could get up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine for leaving a 2-year-old Doberman pinscher chained to a tree, where it died of exposure. Brian G. Smith, 37, ofBrant Lake, is charged with failure to provide shelter, a misdemeanor under the state's agriculture and markets law, according to a news release from the Warren County Sheriff's Office.
The dog, named Zeus, had been chained to a tree since 6 a.m. Jan. 8. SPCA Investigator Joseph Dooris called deputies to the scene by 2:10 p.m. Deputies said Smith hooked Zeus to a chain that didn't have a swivel on it to keep it from getting tangled.
Even when deputies were able to untwist the chain, it wasn't long enough to let Zeus get inside his dog house, deputies said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
