Christopher Lee Adkins, 24, allegedly shot and killed a 95-pound chocolate Laborador named Riley. Adkins has been charged with two felonies in the shooting death of a family pet.
A bond of $15,000 has been set by Magistrate Thomas Raguso after Adkins pleaded not guilty to charges of torturing and killing an animal and weapons possession.
The first charge carries up to four years in prison while the second charge carries a maximum prison term of five years, upon conviction.
Adkins was working at a construction site near the Chateau Cove home of Shannon Raines, the dog's owner. Adkins said the dog tore his trousers, bit his leg, knocked him down and dragged him on the ground two days before the shooting.
Robert Swartwood, Adkins' lawyer, said the "very agressive dog" again attacked Adkins and that Adkins did not have a gun.
When Rains started to leave her Groveland Township home for work, she heard two shots followed by yelps.
Later, Rains next door neighbor came over and said "They shot Riley." She found her 9-year old dog dead.
Preliminary examinations are scheduled to begin Sept 7 in Clarkston's 52-2 District Court. References« Back to Search Results
