Rescued goose among 3 found beheaded

RICHMOND, Ind. - Three geese, including one rescued years ago by city park employees, have been found beheaded and run over in the park.

Richmond police said Tuesday they had no suspects in the killings of the birds, which were found dead Friday at the Glen Miller Park pond.

"Definitely to us this is a criminal act of animal cruelty," police Capt. Melody Truitt said.

The crime could take in federal jurisdiction since a Canada goose - a migratory bird - was among the birds killed.

Park workers were saddened by the killing of the geese, named George, Lucille and Rebel. The birds were longtime park residents and were popular with visitors, who regularly fed them.

"It's sad for me because they trusted people. They were used to people being nice to them," said Paula Frazer, who works for the Parks Department.

George and Lucille, two large white geese, had been at the park for at least seven years, Frazer said. Rebel was a Canada goose that could not fly because of a deformed wing. He was rescued and brought to the park, where George and Lucille bonded with him.
