Cat gutted, tied to fence with own intestines
Vineland, NJ (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Feb 7, 2005
County: Cumberland

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

The SPCA is investigating an act of animal cruelty in which a cat was gutted and its intestines were used to tie the animal to a fence.

A caller reported the black cat hanging upside down on a fence in the residential area of Lincoln and Sheridan avenues early Monday morning.

Diane Starn, the city's animal control officer, and the Cumberland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to the scene to collect the cat. It was taken to the Delsea Drive shelter for examination.

The animal appeared to be sliced and gutted, said Bev Greco, who oversees animal cruelty investigators. The excess guts were draped like a garland over the split-rail fence. A cigarette filter was pushed into the wound.

The corner is a school bus stop, Greco said, speculating it's possible the suspects may be youngsters.

The cat wasn't wearing a collar, so investigators aren't sure whether the animal belonged to someone who lives in the area.
