Dog-fighting - 15 dogs seized
Buffalo, NY (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 13, 2005
County: Erie

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

Animal control officers seized several more dogs from Laurel Street Thursday. That follows the rescue of a dozen other dogs from the same street earlier this week.

Andy, an animal control officer, said, "Well, down at this house, we found dogs with wounds, bloody carpets, ... so we're trying to make sure."

For the second time in three days, animal control officers, armed with search warrants and accompanied by police, converged on Laurel Street, where they rescued three pit bulls. They also confiscated dog fighting paraphernalia, including a treadmill, and drugs.

Thursday's raid brings to 15 the number of dogs taken from homes in the 100 block of Laurel Street. Investigators say the animals were living in deplorable conditions.

Chuck, an animal control officer, said, "It's sad, and nobody, no animal, should be treated like this."

While some residents seemed more upset about the police presence than the alleged dog fighting, Marcy Ford says he's upset because officers took three of his dogs, who he claims have never been involved in such activity.

When told, "They say two dogs had bite marks", Ford replied, "They're puppies, playing around. If a dog's in a fight, you'd see bigger marks, not scars here and there."

Chuck said, "Well, he can say it's a pet, but we know what they're doing; we took two dogs out of the yard and they were chewed up." Asked, "You don't buy his answer..?", Chuck responded,."[I] don't buy that."
