Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies and assistants with the Lawrence County Dog Warden's office are investigating complaints of animal cruelty in the area of Lick Creek Road and Township Road 136.
On Tuesday (Dec 28, 2004), a resident said she saw two boys chasing a dog on a hillside near her house and watched as one boy shot the dog as it was running away from him.
The resident said it is common place to see dogs in the area with the mange, malnourished and mistreated.
Local authorities checked the area and found one dog's carcass lying in a ditch with a bullet wound to the head, as well as other dogs running loose and in need of medical attention.
"I've got two dogs under custody, one dead dog and one that I can't catch that has the mange," assistant dog warden Shannon Neal said.
He estimated the two confiscated dogs and the dead dog were adults between one and three years of age.
Authorities are looking into who owned the dogs, who shot the one dog and what prompted the shooting. References« OH State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Lawrence County, OH
