A Tyrone horse trainer who represented Ireland at international level has appeared at Cookstown Magistrate's Court charged with animal cruelty.

Mark Reid, unemployed, of Grange Road, Cookstown, was convicted of beating a horse at his Grange Road stables on August 1 2003.

A defence solicitor for Reid said he had received hate mail from animal rights campaigners after reports of the charge had appeared in the Press.

The defendant was sentenced to one month's imprisonment suspended for two years.

On further charges of driving while disqualified, taking and driving away a vehicle without the owner's permission and driving without insurance, Reid was fined a total of 350, disqualified from driving for two years and given a six month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

The charges related to an incident on October 21 last when police stopped Reid in Cookstown town centre.

It was the second time he had driven while being disqualified.

Convicting Reid the Resident Magistrate, Rosemary Watters, told him he should consider himself lucky he was walking out of the court and not going to jail.

But she warned the defendant: "If you appear in front of me again, I will remember you and you will serve a custodial sentence."

She further referred to the fact that Reid had obtained legal aid as an unemployed person while running a horse training business and stated she would be referring the legal aid application to the DHSS for investigation.
