When Stuart J. Plasse, 39, greeted police officers at his second-floor apartment on Sixth Street last Wednesday, he had blood on his face, chin and hands.
And cradled in Plasse's arms was a little dog that appeared to be dead.
The dog had a serious eye injury and its tongue was protruding, according to an affidavit by Officer David Allsworth, one of the investigators.
Police officers and firefighters had arrived at Plasse's apartment at 78 Sixth St., in response to a 911 hang-up call.
Acording to Allsworth's affidavit, Plasse appeared to be drunk. He told the officers that his cat had injured the dog - a mixed-breed Pekingese named Molly.
A veterinarian later concluded that the dog's injuries resulted from blunt-force trauma and that the injuries were not caused by a cat.
Police took Plasse to police headquarters whehre he still appeared to be intoxicated, the affidavit said, so Plasse was taken to the Rhode Island Hospital Detoxification Center for observation.
Meanwhile, Animal Control Officer Van Gyzen took the injured Pekingese to the East Bay Animal Hospital, in Seekonk.
Allsworth said, in the affidavit, that Dr Ann Nuttall, a veterinarian at the animal hospital, reported that the animal's prognosis was poor.
Nuttall removed the dog's left eye and discovered that its jaw had been broken in two places. The dog later died from the injuries.
Allsworth then wrote the affidavit to support his request for a warrant for Plasse's arrest.
Plasse was brought in front of District Court Judge Madeline Quirk on Friday and formally charged with cruelty to an animal.
He was released, pending further court action, after posting $100 cash bail. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
