Reward offered for dog killer. An animal advocacy group is offering a $2,500 reward in connection with the killing of a dog found bound with duct tape and shot in the head.

Gretchen Hersman, spokeswoman for In Defense of Animals, said the reward is for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.

She also plans to ask the national Humane Society to contribute to the reward fund.

"I would like to see a $10,000 reward for this," Hersman said.

"I think anyone that is allowed to get away with this type of obscene violence in my estimation could conceivably be quite dangerous."

The male dog was found by two Gibson County workers on March 8 near the Vanderburg and Gibson County Line. He was lying in a ditch near a bridge on County Road 900 West. He was black and believed to be a Labrador mix.

The dog's mouth and front and hind legs had been bound with duct tape, and he had been shot once between the eyes.

"The dog was very well cared for. It was an old dog, but it was in very good condition."

Cindy Hyneman, director of Gibson County Animal Services, said a veterinarian performed a necropsy on the animal. According to the necropsy report, the dog was 7 or 8 years old, was on the "heavy side" and was not neutered.

The dog died from a single gunshot wound, probably fired from a .22 caliber rifle. It had no other bruises or signs of mistreatment.

Hyneman said photographs were taken of the area where the dog was found. However, there were no traceable footprints or anything to indicate what may have happened to the animal.

No one has come forward to report the animal missing and there is no known motive for the killing.
