Pet miniature donkeys shot to death
Brown, IN (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Nov 18, 2004
County: Brown

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Two pet miniature donkeys named Elvis and Whoopie were grazing in their backyard when someone, possibly hunters, shot and killed them on Thursday, November 18, at 7380 Sweetwater Trail.

Owner Judy Simpson called neighbor Marlene VanDevander Friday morning, November 19, and said Elvis and Whoopie had not come in when she called them for supper the previous night. The neighbor then went to search for the two pets, and found them both shot to death.

Conservation Officer Jason Lee, who is investigating the case, recovered evidence at the scene that he hopes will lead to the shooter. He believes that the person may have been hunting on neighboring property when the animals were shot.

"I would not call the individuals who did this... a hunter. By no means do I feel that a donkey, especially a white and a black one, could be confused as a deer. To me, I think it would be very inappropriate to say hunters did it," Officer Lee said. "It is possible that someone back in those woods that day, for the purpose of deer hunting, maliciously, in my mind, shot those animals."

Officer Lee wants anyone who knows who was hunting in the area of Sweetwater Trail near the Neighborhood Church of God on that date to call (800) TIP-IDNR. This is an anonymous tipline.
