Dog abandoned, left for 2 weeks without care
Whitehall, NY (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Dec 31, 1998
County: Washington

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Harry F Guilder, Jr
» Terry Ruger

Harry F. Van Guilder, Jr, 30, and Terry Ruger, 30, both of Glens Falls, each face a misdemeanor charge. They are accused of leaving a 3-year old golden retriever mix in the basement of a Mountain Street, Whitehall, apartment last month.

Goldie, the dog, survived for more than two weeks this winter by eating carpet and surviving on water from broken pipes after authorities say her owners abandoned her.

The charges carry a sentence of up to a year in jail.

Police say the couple moved out of the apartment Jan 1 and didn't take the dog. Said they allegedly left it in the basement, where authorities contend it survived for 16 days by eating carpet and drinking water from burst pipes.

A neighbor shoveling his roof heard the dog barking on Jan 17 and called the police. Veterinarians had to purge the carpet from the dog's system.
