When Huntsville police began investigating the Oct. 9 murder of Anthony Williams, animal control officers removed seven pit bull dogs from his home and handed them over to the Rita B. Huff Humane Society.
A few days later, four of the seven dogs were gone after unknown suspects disabled two security sensor boxes at the animal shelter, cut through a chain-link fence and broke several kennel locks.
Marjolein Lemmon, manager at the Rita B. Huff Humane Society, said it appears whoever stole the dogs targeted them specifically, although she's not certain why.
"Evidently, (the suspects) had been here before," she said Wednesday. "We have three sensor boxes outside. One was cut and stolen and one was smashed as well."
Lemmon believes the suspects may have disabled the sensors during the day, then returned at night and cut through the fence before releasing the animals from the kennels.
Of the seven dogs belonging to Williams which were taken to the shelter, four were stolen. Two were ill and the suspects left those dogs alone, while a third wasn't taken. But two other dogs, an unrelated pit bull and a shepherd mix, are also missing from the shelter, and officials aren't certain if they were taken or simply let go.
HPD Det. Marvin Hyvl said as of Wednesday, he can't connect the theft and William's murder, simply because of a lack of evidence, however the possibility has not been ruled out. According to Hyvl the robbery occurred some time after closing on Oct. 13 and before the center opened Oct. 14.
