Several private Monmouth County citizens witnessed a man rapidly accelerating his vehicle through a flock of seagulls in a mall parking lot. Disturbed by the carnage they witnessed, they called the local police department and the MCSPCA. Eight of the injured birds were quickly gathered up and taken to a wild life rehabilitator. Several of the gulls were dead. Only one will be able to be released, two others spend the rest of their lives at a wildlife sanctuary due to permanent wing damage.

On March 12, 2002 the individual responsible plead guilty to abusing these seagulls. He has been sentenced to community service and received substantial fines.
