Scarbrough, 17-year-old charged with animal abuse in connection with the shooting of a dog in Clay County surrendered to authorities March 29, 2004 morning.

Bradley A. Scarbrough, of Liberty, was in the Clay County jail on $20,000 bond, police said. His next court appearance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday,  March 30, 2004.

Scarbrough was charged Friday with one count of felony animal abuse in connection with the shooting last week. The felony carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The case involves a 3-year-old tan-and-white spaniel mix known as Duncan. The dog was tied to a traffic sign about five miles west of Kearney and shot in the snout with a .22-caliber rifle. The bullet fractured and still is lodged in the dog's neck. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The Liberty teen accused of shooting a stray dog along a rural Clay County road has pleaded not guilty.

Bradley A. Scarbrough, 17, was released Monday from the Clay County Detention Center after posting a $2,000 cash bond on a felony animal abuse charge. His next court date is scheduled for May 19.
