A 77-year-old man is accused of poisoning his neighbor's dog with a mixture of chicken soup and antifreeze.
The dog was euthanized three days after it ate the tainted broth. Raymond Earl Stewart was charged with felony cruelty to animals and gross misdemeanor poisoning animals. He made his first court appearance Monday.
He told investigators he put the soup and antifreeze mixture outside his door so "if the dog came onto (my) property, the dog would eat the soup and get sick," according to a criminal complaint.
A neighbor's black lab ate some of the soup Dec. 9 and became ill. The dog's owners euthanized the lab three days later after persistent kidney failure.
The felony cruelty charge carries a possible two-year jail sentence and a $5,000 fine. The gross misdemeanor poisoning charge carries a possible year sentence and a $3,000 fine. References | WCCO |
