Criminal charges may be filed against a man accused of kicking a dog and breaking its leg. Montgomery County Police found a limping rat terrier named Sassy at Indiana Ford Trailer Court,  Jan., 2004. It was reported  a man was kicking a dog outside the mobile home.

Juan Goodes wife, Richelle said  her husband was mad and picked up the little dog and threw it across the room and it hit the baby bed and broke its leg.

Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County animal control  picked up Sassy after Richelle relinquished custody.

X-ray's revealed Sassys right rear thighbone was broken into two pieces that were in an awkward position. The injury was several days old  and Sassy needed surgery to place a pin in the bone.

Information has been submitted  to Montgomery County Prosecutor for consideration of animal cruelty charges against Juan Goode.

A judge entered a not guilty plea last week for the man accused of kicking his dog into a baby crib.

Juan A. Goode, 38, faces one charge of cruelty to an animal, a class A misdemeanor, which could carry a prison sentence of up to one year. County Court Judge Peggy Lohorn appointed attorney Jim Bowlin as Goodes public defender.

Montgomery County Police Officer Luther Blanton in January 2004 investigated a reported case of dog abuse at Goodes rural Crawfordsville home. A neighbor told Blanton that Goode was kicking a small rat terrier outside the mobile home.

Goodes wife, Richelle, told Blanton that Juan threw the dog, named Sassy. Sassy hit a baby bed on the way down, according to court records. Richelle denied her husband injured the dog during a later interview with the Journal Review.

The Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County removed the dog from the home with Richelles permission. X-rays revealed Sassys thigh bone was broken in two places and required surgery to pin it together.

A public call went out and more than $900 was donated immediately and more later. Extra money was used for other animals in need. Martha Osborne adopted Sassy to live with her in rural Montgomery County.

Goode was charged with animal cruelty and an arrest warrant was issued in February 2004, but never served. It was reissued in June and Goodes initial hearing was Thursday. A bench trial is scheduled for November.
