Nugget, a 13-week-old golden retriever, might want to change her name to Lucky. The pup was tossed out of a moving car in North Georgia last month. Nugget's jaw was broken when she hit the pavement, but she waddled out of the way as the car's driver backed up and tried to run over her. A nearby family witnessed the scene and rushed to her aid.
With her broken jaw muzzled shut -- following surgery by a Fayetteville veterinarian -- Nugget is recovering and will be looking for a home in a couple of weeks, said Debbie DiBenedetto, an assistant at Animal Medical Clinic in Peachtree City, where Nugget is being treated.
"She is so happy, and, luckily, very forgiving of humans, given what's happened," DiBenedetto said.
According to Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta, Nugget was thrown out of the car in late July on Nugget Lane in Dawson County. A family saw it happen and called animal control officers.
Animal control contacted GRRA, a nonprofit volunteer group based in Fayette County.
A GRRA volunteer brought Nugget to Animal Medical Clinic, where veterinarian Jeff Richardson repaired her jaw. GRRA will foot the bill, expected to top out at more than $300.
Despite the trauma, Nugget seems to have moved on. Wednesday afternoon, she pounced around the clinic's waiting room with a stuffed toy, her tongue excitedly licking through an elastic muzzle.
Richardson said Nugget probably will face no lasting physical or psychological effects from her ordeal. "It happened so fast, and she's so young, I don't think she'll even remember it," he said.
The perpetrators could face felony animal cruelty charges. But that's unlikely because witnesses didn't provide officers with a clear description of the car or the people inside, said Eddy Wagoner, GRRA's intake coordinator.
"The sad part about it is when you don't want an animal, you can take it to your shelter or animal control," Wagoner said. "They don't want to be inundated, but at the same time they'd rather take them instead of them being mistreated."
