Police say a single arrest has solved a bizarre hate crime. Officers in Terrell, about 30 miles east of Dallas, say an African-American man beat up a white woman and killed her dog in a racially motivated attack. Stephanie Ates said Gary Gray beat her dog to death. She also said Gray attacked her with a beer bottle and made racial insults.
Gray maintains that he only swatted the dog after it bit him.
"He said, 'I'm sick of you white people being on the south side.' He said, 'You don't belong over here,'" Ates said.
"I ain't said nothing like that ... nothing," Gray said.
If convicted of assaulting Ates, Gray faces up to a year in jail. He can get up to two years in prison if he's found guilty of the animal cruelty charges. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
