more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Hoarding - repeat hffender violates probation
Columbia, MO (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Apr 7, 2011
County: Boone

Disposition: Convicted

Defendants/Suspects:
» Susan B. Kohler
» Anne Kohler - Dismissed

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Columbia woman ordered in November not to possess more than three cats allegedly violated her probation by harboring 15 cats at her mother's home.

Susan B. Kohler might be in violation of her probation after officials with Boone County Animal Control said they discovered the felines at her mother's residence, 1309 Stonehaven Road, on April 7, according to court documents. A neighbor complained to Animal Control about the cats, and Animal Control and city prosecutors believe the cats belong to Kohler.

Kohler and her mother, Anne Kohler, have been charged with having too many animals and animal abuse, according to court records. City ordinance permits the possession of four cats.

The mother and daughter are scheduled for an Aug. 23 disposition hearing, which also will address Susan Kohler's alleged probation violation. Each faces a fine of as much as $1,000 for each violation.

The cats were not removed from the residence even though the Kohlers are suspected of animal abuse. Gerry Worley, environmental health manager, said conditions did not warrant the removal of the cats and the search warrant only allowed a search of the residence.

Susan Kohler is on probation after she pleaded guilty to animal abuse in November. Municipal Judge Robert Aulgur suspended the imposition of her sentence, which means her guilty plea will be erased from the record if she complies with the conditions of her two-year probation.

The incident happened in June when Animal Control found 28 cats in Room 328 of the Motel 6 at 3402 I-70 Drive S.E. Dead kittens also were found in a freezer in the room.

Susan Kohler was ordered to not have any Animal Control violations during her probation period and was ordered not to possess, harbor or own more than three cats. She is permitted to keep a Pomeranian dog but no other animals.

Animal Control must be allowed to inspect any building, office or shed in or outside the city where Kohler might be keeping animals as part of her supervision. Aulgur also ordered Kohler to continue seeing her psychiatrist and to comply with prescriptions. She suffers from depression, according to court documents.

Case Updates

A Columbia woman no longer is allowed to own cats after pleading guilty to animal abuse for the second time in eight months.

Susan B. Kohler pleaded guilty last week to animal abuse and having too many animals by harboring 15 cats at her mother's home at 1309 Stonehaven Road. The animals were discovered April 7, according to court documents, and were in violation of Kohler's probation after she pleaded guilty to animal abuse in November.

Susan B. Kohler's original sentence and subsequent probation from her November guilty plea to animal abuse were removed, and Municipal Judge Robert Aulgur sentenced Kohler to 30 days in the Boone County Jail for violating her probation. He ordered her to serve five of those days in jail. Her new probation sentence, which started over again last week., includes the condition that she no longer can own cats. She also will pay $1,000 in fines and court costs, said Shara Meyer, municipal court clerk.

City prosecutors dropped charges against Anne Kohler, the defendant's mother, Meyer said.

In June 2010, Animal Control found 28 cats in Room 328 of the Motel 6 at 3402 I-70 Drive S.E. Dead kittens also were found in a freezer in the room.

Kohler admitted to renting the room when she pleaded guilty to animal abuse and was placed on two years of probation. She was ordered not to possess, harbor or own more than three cats.
