A 13-year-old boy came to the rescue of a cat being tortured by two teenage boys in Cole Harbour. The boy, whose name has not been released, revived the cat by giving it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after seeing the older boys hanging the animal by its neck from a rope on a tree branch Wednesday, RCMP said.
Two Cole Harbour boys, aged 16 and 14, were arraigned Thursday on charges of cruelty to an animal.
Cole Harbour RCMP allege the boys, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, took turns holding the rope.
RCMP were alerted to the incident, which occurred at about 6 p.m. Wednesday near Beaver Crescent.
Officers arrested the two boys later in the evening.
The teens were kept in custody overnight before making Thursday's court appearances.
The older boy appeared before a youth court judge in Halifax provincial court, while the younger one was arraigned in family court before a Supreme Court justice hearing youth matters.
Each boy also faced single counts of violating a court order.
The boys, who are believed to be brothers, were released into the custody of their parents.
The 16-year-old is to return to court July 18 to enter pleas, while the younger teen is slated to be back on Oct. 8.
Case UpdatesA Cole Harbour teenager involved in an animal cruelty case that drew national attention this summer was found guilty in a Halifax court.
Beside being convicted of wilfully causing suffering to the cat - which court heard was dragged into the woods with a cord around its neck and then temporarily hung from a branch - the 16-year-old was found guilty of breaching the probation term he was serving for derailing a passenger train in Stewiacke in April 2001.
Provincial Court Judge Pam Williams ordered the boy, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, to return to court Dec. 19 for sentencing.
The 16-year-old pleaded not guilty in August. But earlier this month, his 14-year-old brother pleaded guilty to a charge stemming from the torture of the cat, which occurred July 9 near Beaver Crescent in Cole Harbour. | | Update posted on Dec 19, 2003 - 7:20PM |
One of two teens accused of torturing and hanging a cat will go to trial Oct. 23 after entering not guilty pleas on two counts Friday. Accompanied by his mother, the 16-year-old boy, who is charged with cruelty to an animal and violating a court order, sat quietly clutching his baseball cap as a lawyer spoke on his behalf.

The 16-year-old boy, who is charged with cruelty to an animal and violating a court order, will return to youth court Aug. 15 to enter a plea.
