Police are trying to figure out who severely injured a neighborhood dog by shooting it with a BB gun.

Sydney, an Australian shepherd mix, started acting sick on Sept 30. Veterinarians x-rayed her and discovered that she had been shot with a BB, owner Derek Lively said yesterday.

The BB and about three inches of Sydney's intestines were removed later in the day, he said. Derek Lively was meeting with a veterinarian last night, trying to determine the dog's chances of survival.

The dog has been on antibiotics and pain medication since the injury, said Lively, who lives on Little Rob Road. As of last night, he said, they were trying to figure out how much bacteria remained in the dog's system.

"They're not sure if she has enough white blood cells to fight it off, so she might not survive," he said.

Police Chief Philip Consentino said investigators don't know who shot the dog. Whoever is responsible, he said, will be charged with animal cruelty if captured. No witnesses have reported seeing the shooting.

"We haven't been able to put anything together concrete at this time," Consentino said.

Lively and his wife, Kim, were in Florida when Sydney was shot and he said his neighbor, who was babysitting the dog, heard a yelp from the pet Saturday morning. Sydney then came into her house and started trembling.

Lively said veterinarians told him the shooting must have happened at close range because of how deep the BB went. He said he was also told the wound was fresh. Consentino said he believes the shooting was an isolated incident.

"The rest of the neighbors who have animals shouldn't have any problems or any fears," he said.

Kim Lively got the dog from an animal shelter years ago.

Another neighbor, Keri Beckerman, said friends from the neighborhood have been trying to raise money for the costs of the dog's care.

Beckerman said she was startled when she learned what had happened to the dog.

"I was sick to my stomach," she said.

Case Updates

Kim Lively says her dog would shy away from strangers because she was so timid. So, she's shocked that anyone would feel the need to shoot the dog with a BB gun, leading to her death this week.

Sydney, an Australian sheepdog mix, had been clinging to life since Saturday, when a veterinarian discovered that a BB was lodged about three-quarters of the way through her body. Her owners decided to have her euthanized Thursday, shortly after midnight, after learning the dog likely wouldn't be able to survive further treatment, Lively said yesterday.

Lively said she was optimistic earlier in the week that her dog, which she's owned for about 10 years, would pull through. She had undergone surgery Saturday, having the BB and about three inches of her intestines removed. By Wednesday night, Lively said, she knew she wouldn't make it.

"Before, I thought we could save her because she looked like she wanted to fight, but when I saw her she just looked so -- I don't even know the word -- different," she said. "She looked like she couldn't take anymore."

Atkinson Police Officer Jody Consentino said yesterday the shooting is still under investigation and no arrests have yet been made. On Tuesday, Police Chief Philip Consentino said whoever is responsible may face felony charges if caught.

Lively said she hopes the shooter was not somebody who lives nearby so neighbors don't have to worry any longer. The fact that the dog was shot, she said, makes the death more difficult to deal with.

"It's just really hard to lose (your) best friend," she said. "It would be easier to take if it were natural causes or even being run over by a car." A neighbor was pet-sitting the dog Saturday morning when she heard a yelp from outside. Sydney then came scurrying into her home and began trembling and acting sick. She was taken to an animal hospital for emergency treatment.

The BB must have been shot at close range because of how deep it went, Lively said. The shot was fatal because it hit vital organs, she said.
