Ducks abandoned
Laramie, WY (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jul 31, 2005
County: Albany

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Several white domestic Peking ducks that were raised for and shown at this year's fair have been abandoned by their former owners and left to beg for crumbs in Laramie's La Prele Park since August.

"We know that they were raised for the fair ... because they're marked with a leg band that indicates they were used for the Albany County Fair," animal control officer Rene Sollars told the Laramie Boomerang.

Once award winners and treasured pets, fate has turned against the ducks who lack the instincts to avoid dogs and humans. These ducks probably won't know to fly south for the winter.

"They don't know any better, and they'll pretty much let you walk right up to them," she said.

Sollars said two of the ducks were attacked by dogs and had to be put down.

Releasing a domestic duck into the wild can get you animal cruelty charges and fines of $260 to $750

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
