A Rotorua councillor facing child and animal pornography charges has been dumped after one term.

Chris Campbell was seeking re-election to Rotorua City Council after first being elected in 2002 with strong support.

But on Saturday, he trailed the filed in the council's South Ward, polling just 927 votes.

Earlier this year Mr Campbell was charged with having 73 images of child pornography stored on a hard drive on his personal computer.

He is also accused of having three printed images of child pornography, three images of child pornography on a floppy disk and 24 images of adults having sex with animals. The charges are due to be heard early next year.
