Dogs beaten with hammer, shovel
Beaverton, OH (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Aug 22, 2012
County: Washington

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 3 files available

Alleged:
» Carl Crosswhite, Jr.
» Stanford Evans

Beaverton police said reports of dogs being struck with a shovel and a hammer led them to make four arrests Wednesday morning.

The pit bulls were taken from a Beaverton home and checked out by Oregon Humane Society workers.

Several neighbors called police around 10 a.m. to report at least two pit bulls being assaulted by their owners in the backyard of a home on Southwest 11th Street.

Once police arrived and spoke with witnesses, they determined the dogs were indeed assaulted, so they called in the Oregon Humane Society and Washington County Animal Control.

Carl Crosswhite Jr., 43; Stanford Evans, 53; Steven Young, 36; and Darlene Exendine, 48, all face charges of animal neglect and animal abuse.

Neighbors who called 911 told FOX 12 they believe a dog fight led to the abuse.

"Organized dog fighting is not ok anywhere much less right here in our neighborhood," said one neighbor who didn't want to be identified.

"They were hitting them everywhere and they were trying to break them up," he said.

In addition, the three men also face charges of disorderly conduct for threatening neighbors who told them to stop hurting the dogs.

A total of 10 pit bulls were taken from the home; four were surrendered to the Oregon Humane Society by the owner and six were seized by the Beaverton Police Department.

All of the animals are currently with the Oregon Humane Society to be evaluated and treated.
