County: DuvalDisposition: Alleged
Alleged: Mathew Allen Simmons
After being treated and released from the hospital for injuries sustained when she was beaten by her boyfriend, a local woman was met with another traumatic event, authorities say.
When the woman went with neighbors to check on her six puppies, they noticed blood in the bathroom, around the toilet and on a blanket the puppies had been laying on, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Then one of them saw a black garbage bag leaning against the garbage can.
In the bag lay the six puppies, dead.
Police arrested Mathew Allen Simmons, 25, the victim's boyfriend, and charged him with seven counts of animal cruelty and one count of domestic battery, according to the Duval County jail website. He is currently incarcerated in lieu of $120,000 bail.
Simmons also threw the mother dog out of the home during the domestic violence incident, a witness said. The mother dog now appears to have a broken leg, according to the report.
Simmons has previous convictions for felony battery and child abuse.
