4-month-old puppy tortured to death Dresden, TN (US)Incident Date: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 County: Weakley
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: » Preston Ray Odle » Levi Nash Evans
Two teenagers will appear in Weakley County General Sessions Court on June 13 on charges of aggravated animal cruelty following the death of a 4-month-old Saint Bernard puppy.
Dresden Police Chief Randal Walker on Tuesday said Preston Odle, 18, and Levi Evans, 19, are accused of breaking the animal's ribs, stabbing it, kicking it and binding its mouth before hanging it in a tree.
"It's sickening," said Walker, adding that community outrage with the accused teens has sparked a lot of conversation about animal abuse. "We had a murder case in January that didn't bring this much attention. But in this case you have a poor animal that can't talk or defend itself."
Walker said Odle was given the puppy last Tuesday by a local resident looking to find it a good home.
"Odle decided he didn't want the puppy anymore," Walker said. "And that's when they started to abuse it."
Walker said neither of the teens has a lengthy criminal history.
"Odle was supposed to do some community service (previously), but I don't believe he ever reported," Walker said.
Neither Odle or Evans are employed, according to Walker, nor did they graduate from the local high school.
"They've shown no remorse for what they've done," he said.
Attempts to reach Odle and Evans by telephone were not successful on Tuesday evening.
Walker said the two will appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on June 13.
The teens have been released on bond.
"I look for them to get some counseling and jail time," he said. "I hope this is the last one of these cases."
An online petition has been started requesting stiff penalties for Odle and Evans at
