Police believe a Lincoln man hit or kicked his girlfriend's 4-year-old Chihuahua in the head Tuesday night, killing the dog.

The girlfriend, 53, told police she was taking a bath in her east Lincoln home when her boyfriend yelled something was wrong with her dog.

The woman found her Chihuahua, Bella, bleeding from the nose, ears and mouth, Lincoln Police Capt. Joy Citta said Thursday.

Michael Darby, 53, 4840 Cleveland Ave., left but was later arrested by police. Citta said he was jailed on suspicion of felony animal abuse.

Darby gave no statement to police, Citta said, and the girlfriend told police the couple hadn't been arguing.

"She said that he didn't like her animals," Citta said.
