Dog and woman stabbed, both die
Mulberry, FL (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Sep 6, 2011
County: Polk

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: David Warren McCorkle

A Mulberry woman stabbed by her boyfriend earlier this week has died, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, who say the man is now being charged with murder.

Deputies say that on Tuesday, David McCorkle, 55, stabbed his live-in girlfriend Tina Donelson several times, killing his dog and stabbing himself. Then he told a Polk County deputy to kill him and threw an 8-inch butcher knife toward the law enforcement official, deputies said.

Deputies arrested McCorkle, on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and animal cruelty causing death. The charges are being upgraded to murder, deputies say.

The incident began about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday when McCorkle argued with Donelson, about the fact he was unemployed, deputies said.

McCorkle took an 8-inch butcher knife and stabbed Donelson in the "upper torso," causing potentially lethal injuries, an arrest affidavit states. One of the stabs "possibly traveled through her chest and exited her back."

Deputies said McCorkle killed his dog - a large brindle pit bull mix - when the animal tried attacking McCorkle to defend Donelson.

When deputies arrived, Donelson and McCorkle came out of the house. They were covered in blood and armed with knives.

Donelson collapsed in the yard.

McCorkle stood in the doorway.

A deputy told him to put the knife down; McCorkle told the deputy to kill him.

McCorkle threw the knife toward the deputy, the affidavit states. The knife bounced off a patrol vehicle and nearly struck the deputy in the head.

McCorkle fell to the ground and was taken into custody.

Donelson, who underwent surgery at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, died at 6:12 p.m. today, deputies say.

McCorkle told deputies that his own stab wounds were self-inflicted; Donelson said that after being attacked, she had armed herself with a butcher knife and tried cutting McCorkle's arms to stop the attack.

McCorkle remains hospitalized, under the watch of a PCSO deputy, and will be transported to the Polk County Jail upon his release, deputies say.
