Two people in Dorchester County are facing animal cruelty and related charges following accusations that they abused a dog under their care.

Cheryl Kay Nelson, 39, of 108 Maryland Ave., Hurlock, and Deangelo Anthony Dukes, 29, of 623 Cross St., Cambridge, were charged with animal cruelty, failure to provide sustenance, restraining a dog in a manner that unreasonably limits his movement, restraining a dog in a manner that restricts his access to shelter and water and leaving a dog outside without shelter.

Police said the charges came about after Nelson and Dukes moved from an apartment in Hurlock and tied a male pug to a tree and abandoned it.

Both suspects are scheduled for a court appearance in Dorchester County District Court on Sept. 12 at 9 a.m.

According to police, the dog is being treated for ailments he suffered during the ordeal.
